So what’s really in those conventional diaper creams and why does it matter?
Petroleum-based diaper rash products vs Natural fatty butters (Natty Fatties)

They have certain creams and lotions that come in these tubes and then market it as gentle they’ve been trusted for generations and they are recommended in hospitals but when you look past the branding what you find is not nourishment What you find is just merely a petroleum barrier.
These are the products and the names we grew up with, watching my little brother and sister get their daily slather to ease their exceptionally sensitive skins of redness and irritation. Knowing what I know about how and why the 'conventional' way of doing things has failed us time and time again, I, as the curious Rebel that I have always been, made sure to check the facts and distinguish the superior methods of caring for one's tribe. Remember folks, baby powder causes cancer! How long has the American public been exposed to their mockery of regulations, of true checks on safety and efficacy for the American people!
So when I find a product that I like, I stick to it and tell everyone about it. When I don't find one I like or it is not available readily to me, I think, how can I make my own?
And look the Rebel will give it to you clear and with no BS. So let us start by saying the conventional stuff like Desitin, does contain zinc oxide at 13% which is effective for irritation and forms a physical shield against moisture. But a distinction that we will be making here is that zinc oxide protects the skin but it does not heal the skin. Everything in this formula is there just to either:
Hold the zinc suspended in place
To create a waterproof coating
To prevent bacterial growth
in a product involving not just petroleum base but water solubility which are highly susceptible to unwanted bacterial and mold growth without certain preservatives added. Now our base for this Desitin are petroleum byproducts as it contains petrolatum, Mineral oil and microcrystalline wax. As petroleum derivatives they create an inclusive film that seals skin from moisture but they do not feed, rebuild, or biologically support the skin barrier in any way shape or form folks.
So now you got to ask yourself what really matters to your baby’s delicate skin? Petrolatum and mineral oil are refined from crude oil and cosmetic grade versions. So unlike the Natty Fatties we like to use at home, conventional products raise concerns for potential contamination with Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). There are also the issues of environmental persistence as Petroleum-based skincare ingredients are highly resistant to natural bio-degradation and wash off into wastewater, accumulating in aquatic ecosystems. Not to mention the fact that not only are you expelling bad vibes out there into the world, but the vibes on the skin ain't so great either, as these products offer no nutritional support for the skin.
The Environmental Working Group gives desitin an overall low hazard rating with two out of 10 but does flag use restrictions, allergy immunotoxicity concerns, and contamination concerns for certain ingredients So low hazard does not mean optimal it means unlikely to cause immediate harm.
Desitin also contains dimethicone - A synthetic silicone polymer which forms a smooth plastic-like coating over the skin, It prevents water loss -yes. But again no nourishment no lipid replenishment and no microbiome support. And much like most of what we have grown up with, it’s a mechanical protection and not a biological repair.
Because desitin contains water and plant extract (aloe), it requires preservation.
It contains:
Phenoxyethanol
1,2-Hexanediol
Caprylyl Glycol
Tropolone
All antimicrobial stabilizers. Phenoxyethanol in particular is used commonly in baby products but brought up in some pediatric discussions due to potential irritation in high amounts. Is it catastrophic? Maybe not illegal certainly not (though you know how we feel bout legality in a rigged system hahaha!). For this product, stabilizers are necessary because the formula contains water. Anhydrous butter does not require this system. And by anhydrous, I mean a fat-based butter or lotion or balm, and yes, you already know ourpreferences here at Rebel Shaman ;-)
Also inside of the desitin you find PEG 30 dipolyhydroxystearate and sorbitan sesquioleate. Sorbitan sesqui aliot It is known as as a contact allergen in some individuals.
Now let’s talk about Vaseline which is 100% petrolatum, one Of the ingredients found in Desitin. Its pros are that it’s effective barrier with a minimal ingredient list and no preservatives needed. However the cons are it is a pure petroleum derivative with zero skin nutrition no anti-inflammatory activity no micro-nutrients and no biological compatibility beyond occlusion. It is essentially a moisture lid Not skin food.
Barrier versus biological support
Here’s the core distinction parents are rarely told. Conventional diaper creams are designed to block moisture and prevent worsening of rash but they are not designed to rebuild lipid layers nor deliver bio-available vitamins, support natural skin regeneration, nor do they reduce inflammation through whole fat nutrient density. They are defensive not restorative.
Why ingredients simplicity matters for baby
Infant skin is thinner than adult skin and absorbs more rapidly as it has an immature barrier and is more reactive. Every additional synthetic compound increases formulation complexity and complexity increases the probability of irritation, sensitization, and contact dermatitis. However with the minimal anhydrous nutrient dense formulas like the ones that we offer we avoid:
Nasty Preservatives
PEG compounds
petroleum Byproducts
silicone films
The bottom line is this:
Desitin is effective as a moisture barrier as are many other products of this sort. Vaseline is effective also as a moisture barrier, but neither are biologically nourishing. They coat. They seal. They do not feed. Protection is good. Restoration is better.
Feed baby’s skin. Tap back into ancestral wisdom. Check this link for the formula I use for my children.
Keep the fossil fuels off your skin, and in your engines. unless you invented a water engine. Then just don’t tell anyone don’t patent it and make it open source information, anonymously for us all to reap! Muahahahaha!
Ha ha ha! Quite an agenda we have here! And while I love the idea of making a buck selling a product,
I just cannot do it without it being of the highest caliber of quality in the realm of Health and Wellness.
My spirit as a Healer only wants to spread Love and Healing and Wellness to you all. I like most of you, grew up on products that our ancestors would have deemed unworthy of the consumption and usage of any child.
But our poor overworked parents had no way of knowing better. I mean few of us had internet in our homes back then. Ignorance can be forgiven, once we know better we can do better. Hardships and suffering can lead us to the truth! To wisdom we can apply to our daily lives to enhance our experience in this realm.
I know what it’s like to grow up sick and not knowing why you were sick. It took me a long time to climb out of that dark hole and to reclaim my birthright and I Swore solemnly to never allow my children and my family nor the future generations to suffer as such.
So we cut through all the BS, we cut through all the hype!
and dedicate our lives to the service of our tribe!
of our community,
join us in our rebellion!
